ASTM D5379 is in Touchstone’s NADCAP and ISO 17025 scope.
ASTM D5379 testing determines the shear properties of composite materials that are reinforced by high-modulus fibers. The materials are either continuous-fiber or discontinuous-fiber-reinforced composites. ASTM D5379 is also commonly referred to as an Iosipescu Shear Test.
ASTM D5379 loads the specimen through its top and bottom edges while ASTM D7078 loads the specimen through the specimen faces.
To conduct this test a rectangular flat strip composite material coupon is symmetrically v-notched. The sample preparation, including notching, can be done at your facility or by Touchstone. Strain gages are applied to both sides of the coupon. A special fixture is used to hold the coupon and load is applied at a specified rate until failure occurs. Touchstone has extensive experience in utilizing different coupon geometries, the use of different tab materials and adhesives, and proper preparation of notches, all of which are critical to ensure accurate results. Results can include shear stress/ultimate strength, shear strain/ultimate strain, shear chord modulus of elasticity, and offset shear strength. Properties determined from this test may be used for material specifications, research and development, quality assurance and structural design and analysis.
Please email info@trl.com or call (304) 547-5800 for information regarding test procedures, results, specimen information, pricing or any other ASTM D5379 questions you may have. Touchstone Engineers are experienced in shear testing of many materials and will be able to help if you are unsure whether the material should be tested per ASTM D5379 (Iosipescu Shear) or ASTM D7078 (Rail-Shear)
