Cracking Failure of Longwall Pan Floor Plate
A coal operator requested that Touchstone conduct an investigation of a cracking failure in a longwall pan floor plate.
The cracks developed longitudinally in several of the individual longwall machine segments under the impact of falling coal and rock.
Elemental analysis and charpy impact tests demonstrated that the plate did not meet the specified mechanical property requirements.
The failure was found to be the result of substandard steel used to produce the plate during fabrication.
