ASTM D3532 testing covers the determination of gel time of carbon fiber-epoxy tape and sheet with either high or low viscosity.
A specimen of approximately 5 mm (0.25 in) square is placed between microscope cover glasses on a hot plate that is preheated to either 120 °C or 175 °C. Pressure is applied to the specimen through the cover glass with a wood pick to form a bead of resin at the edge of the cover glass. The time from the application of the heat until the resin stops forming strings by contact with the pick is referred to as the gel time.
The gel time reported by this method can be a useful measure for material acceptance.
